I am not sure if my question is appropriate for your newsletter, but I have been impressed at how well-researched your answers have been, and if this is not related to your area of expertise, perhaps you can direct me to an appropriate source.
My mom’s husband is selling a product he claims will cure just about everything, and most specifically, it cures cancer. My mom recently finished radiation treatments for breast cancer, and he believes that if they had known about this drink before her treatment, she could have used it and not gone through the radiation.
I am aware that there are many different types of herbs, fruits, and so on that can be beneficial to our health, but I am also concerned when something is advertised as a “miracle cure.”
Have you heard about this drink/fruit? Is there valid research verifying the claims?

I have no doubt there are astounding breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer and other diseases. Certainly, I believe we can ‘eat’ our way to optimal health. But I’m always cautious of commercial interests behind such claims like those made by you mom’s husband.
I think we have a lot more control over our health and longevity than we give ourselves credit. And it doesn’t have to cost us an arm and a leg! Let me share with you the following.
In the mid 1950s, a brilliant German scientist - Dr. Johanna Budwig - using a combination of linseed oil and sulphur-based proteins proved conclusively that a return to the natural ways of eating can cure cancer. Do you think that this information was eagerly accepted by a waiting world desperately searching for a cancer cure? Not on your life! Recognizing the dangers of commercially manufactured dietary fats (such as margarine, hard shortening, and vegetable oils), Dr Budwig sought to publicize her findings, but she found her way blocked by German manufacturers with a heavy financial stake in those products.
It was Dr Budwig who discovered that the right combination of essential fatty acids (potent and active in linseed oil) and sulphur-based proteins (present in abundance in low-fat cottage cheese) is the magic formula for conquering cancer and the other diseases of fatty degeneration.
Dr Johanna Budwig is known and highly respected around the world as Germany’s premiere biochemist. In addition, she holds a Ph.D. in Natural Science, has had medical training, and was schooled in pharmaceutical science, physics, botany, and biology.
Dr Budwig has lectured all over Europe. Her fame precedes her, and she is acclaimed on the Continent for her important work.
The following excerpt of Dr Johanna Budwig’s published research material is taken from the highly acclaimed publication ‘How To Fight Cancer and Win‘ by William L. Fischer, published by Agora Health Books.
This book, first published in 1992, not only gives equal time to the viewpoints of orthodox medicine and targets all the new scientific research, but also explores documented cancer preventives, and very thoroughly explains the general base for a lifetime diet for the prevention of cancer, arteriosclerosis, and other degenerative diseases pervading our society.
Dr Budwig write, “As far back as 1957, the Cancer Research Institute of Paris, France, begin studies to determine the exact differences between a cancer cell and a normal cell. As revealed during the International Congress of Nutrition, the French scientists announced that they had found a lot of undissolved fat deposited in the nucleus, body, and plasma of the cancer cell. In his book The Cancer Problem, Professor Bauer of Germany said that fat can both dissolve tumors and cause tumors. Although at the time this statement appeared contradictory, we know now that there are many different types of fat.
“Following this line of reasoning, it is obvious that if we feed the body the highly unsaturated and oxygenated essential fatty acids it requires, along with the high-quality protein that makes fat easily soluble, it will counteract toxic and poisonous accumulations in the tissues. If we also stay away from chemical preservatives, then many, many people will become healthy very fast - even some who have been given up on by doctors and hospitalized to die. I have proved this premise many times.
“Every part of the body is affected adversely by the use of saturated fats, including the brain, the liver, the kidneys, and the nervous system. But the function of the heart is perhaps the hardest hit when a disturbance in the fat metabolism occurs. When the wrong kind of fat has been ingested, it is transported via the blood and lymph. Fat globules (atherosclerotic plaque) are deposited in these vital pathways, leading to heart disease.
“Poor nutrition gives rise to many problems. For instance, I once visited a woman in Switzerland who was suffering from terminal cancer. As a mother, her main concern was not herself but the health of her two children, a boy of 12 and a girl of 14. Both were obese and looked ill. I gathered the little family together and spoke to them of the importance of eating correctly. The daughter said to me in a soft voice, “What is this wonderful preparation that can make us all well?” I explained how to prepare a cottage-cheese salad dressed with linseed oil and how it could benefit the entire household.
“On the whole, I blame the older generation for the generally poor health of so many. Foods are commonly over-processed, and chemical additives are used to extend the shelf life and make more money for the manufacturers. The wrong kinds of fats are used, and they are not pure. Many sexual dysfunctions are caused because the body cannot metabolize these foods. Fortunately, many health problems can be easily remedied simply by correcting one’s diet.
“When I talk about my linseed-oil/high-quality-protein fare, it is nothing but a simple food that contains the most active fat known to me: linseed oil. In this form, the essential fatty acids are easily assimilated and made soluble in connection with essential amino acids (protein) in the form of cottage cheese. This is good-tasting and very palatable. It has been used in Europe for many years by hundreds and thousands of individuals.
“I tell you now that this simple food can inhibit the growth of tumors. By completely natural means, fat metabolism is stimulated and the size of the tumor actually decreases. Of course, it is better than you not wait until three of four doctors and several hospitals have told you that your tumor is incurable. Instead, regain maximum health by always using the best nutrition. In a very short period of time, event the most seriously ill person will feel better.
“Very often I go into hospitals and take home very seriously sick cancer patients who have been told they don’t have long to live. The first encouragement these sick people and their families experience when they say things like ‘In the hospital, I couldn’t urinate,’ or ‘In the hospital, I couldn’t have a bowel movement,’ or ‘In the hospital, I couldn’t clear the mucus from my throat.’ Suddenly all those blockages clear and the system becomes activated again, simply because the linseed oil and cottage cheese I give are rich in essential fatty acids and electrons that emulsify the blockages and remove them. Sick people tell me, ‘I feel so much lighter and not dragged down and heavy any more.’
“We have to return to this immune biological way of eating. I have been to Japan, China, and even India to attend many scientifically oriented symposiums and have connections with many researchers in this field. They all wonder the same thing: ‘Why is it that the biological approach to treating disease is so often attacked by authorities in the orthodox medical field?’ I myself have been to court many times to defend my beliefs. Fortunately, all courts have ruled in my favor.
“What is it that I am doing? It’s very simple. If any cancer patient comes to me, I just give him simple, natural nutrition. That’s all. What can we learn from all this?
“First, we must restore correct nutrition. Fats, proteins, fruits, and vegetables are very important. But we have to be careful to take them in an unrefined and totally natural state, as nature intended.
“Second, we should be careful to avoid foods that have been contaminated with chemicals through processing or refining or treatment with antibiotics and growth hormones.
“To stay healthy and maintain all the vital functions of the body, we absolutely must be able to metabolize fat efficiently. The continuing research on fat metabolism in connection with oxygenation, absorption, and assimilation of energy is of immense importance. If we are to survive in the Western civilized world as individuals and as a race, it’s time to think about living our lives according to sound biological principles.
“The secret of the wisdom of the universe is that science must conform with nature. Science and nature must work in harmony. Time is running out for all of us. We must begin to think, act, and, most importantly, eat responsibility for the health and welfare of the race.”
