How is progesterone used to treat PMS?
The treatment approach to PMS is to address estrogen dominance before it sets in. Some women find it necessary to commence progesterone earlier than day 12 purely to overcome the build-up of tension and associated symptoms.
In theory and in practice, the best way to treat PMS with progesterone is to work from day 12 if your have a 28 day cycle, or day 14 if your have a 30/32 day cycle. If you build up your progesterone levels from day 12, increasing gradually prior to your period, you will take control of your PMS very, very quickly.
Response to progesterone for PMS is usually effective and perhaps one of the easiest conditions to treat in our experience. Women find that within 3 months their life is usually back on track, asymptomatic using between 20-30mg thereafter from day 12-26.
You should use your cream according to symptom relief, particularly to treat anxiety and stress. Progesterone cream has a calmative effect on the body, reducing stress (which can sometimes negate progesterone’s effect on the body). Therefore, it’s a good idea to carry your cream around in your handbag so you can immediately control extreme and sometimes nasty mood swings.
Women report the most effective way to do this is to apply cream (dabs) to the temples and behind the neck. The effect of the application usually kicks in within the hour. Repeat as necessary throughout the day, consequently reducing stress, anxiety and associated symptoms. Some months may be worse than others depending of whether you have ovulated and your stress levels. So dosage can vary month to month. A base physiological dose being 16-20mg, equivalent to output of a woman ovulating.
Diet and nutrition, the use of phytoestrogenic herbs and plants extracts such as wild yam can often have a huge impact on the treatment of PMS, as does weight reduction and a good exercise program (which increases the level of endorphins in the brain and helps us to feel good).
