How safe is progesterone if you’ve suffered from hepatitis and jaundice as a teenager?

Hi Catherine,

I remember seeing somewhere on the internet that it may be unsafe to use the progesterone cream if you have had hepatitis. Am I recalling this correctly? I can’t find any reference to it now and am wondering if it will be safe for my mum to use - she suffered from hepatitis and jaundice as a teenager.

Thank you,

Leeanne

Dear Leeanne,

Having had a history of hepatitis would not preclude someone from using progesterone cream. There are plenty of more toxic substances being dealt with by the liver than progesterone.

The liver metabolises not only hormones, but numerous other toxic body wastes, ingested chemicals eg. alcohol, caffeine, prescription, recreational and over the counter drugs to name a few.

If your mother hasn’t has any liver problems since her teens then I would suggest her liver has dealt with far more toxic substances than progesterone in the intervening years.

In my opinion, your mum has a green light to use progesterone cream.

Thank you,

Michael
