I am getting very bad headaches / migraines on progesterone cream.
Headaches should eventually lessen month by month. Some women have taken 7-12 months of persistent effort and adjustment on progesterone creams to see fabulous results emerge. It has been for some, a time of trial and error and debilitation. These women diligently followed nutritional guidelines and methodical application of progesterone cream to see their efforts pay off.
When you commence progesterone supplementation, in the first 8 weeks in particular when estrogen receptors are being woken up in the body as a result of the re-introduction of progesterone, headaches can actually be exacerbated. This is why we suggest you double your dose of progesterone cream (up to 10%) and introduce phytoestrogens and magnesium to help counteract the side effects of estrogen wake up. And get in early, apply cream before you feel a headache coming on.
Additionally, between the 8 week to 4 month timeframe while the body is adjusting to renewed progesterone levels and utilising progesterone to oppose estrogen dominance, that women try to avoid codeine-based analgesics. We have observed that codeine can often set up a pathway of increased pain and withdrawal symptoms, while overloading the liver. Long term analgesic can accumulated in the body, and may take quite some time to be removed.
Of equal importance is the need to detoxify via a liver cleansing diet. And avoid trigger foods and substances that may set off allergies. For once the liver is no longer overburdened, progesterone will work more effectively. All our hormones are broken down by the liver and if the liver is fatty, has accumulated toxins through drug ingestion for pain management, it means progesterone will further burden the liver. A lot of women are not aware of this. In fact, if a woman reports nausea when starting progesterone it is often reflective of her poor liver functioning status, and the need to assist it by way of a detoxification program.
Journal charting can assist women in identifying their triggers and when they occur, note how long they may last, degree of intensity, associated stresses, whether it be internal, chemical, food or toxic. Patterns will emerge over the 7 month period.
Evidence the Natural-Progesterone-Advisory-Network.com website has gathered to date suggests that women who follow a strategic health plan that incorporates regular massage, where possible meditation, detoxing the body, and substituting pain killers with magnesium, St Johns Wort, and other natural anti-stressers and calmers in the form of natural herbs. The end result is far more rewarding and longer lasting than to the more traditional drug-induced ‘instant pain relief’ approach.
Use a premium phytoestrogen to protect estrogen receptors from the more toxic estrogens (xenestrogens) and more potent estrogens manufactured by the body, thus toning down the impact of estrogen dominance, calming and blocking these receptors with plant estrogens.
Progesterone will work if you hang in there, however, it may be a long haul, and initially it may not appear to be giving you results. It’s a case of persistence and patience, and following strategies that will be long lasting.
Progesterone is a journey … not a quick fix. Headache management is complex, and needs to be approached holistically.

When you say to double the dose of progesterone cream up to 10%, are you talking about 10% in one day? Also, can I do this during my menstrual period?

Dear Nola,
When I stated above “double your dose of progesterone cream (up to 10%)” is meant double our dose, whatever that may be, but try NOT to exceed 100mg (10%) per day.
We can stay on progesterone, in those early days, without a break. HOWEVER, we want to mirror nature. The body produces progesterone from (roughly) Day 12 until Day 26. It may be foolish to fly in the face of Mother Nature!
There are women are on much higher doses, but they tend to be under the care of a treating physician who monitors their progress.
And we know, from experience, once you become progesterone replete, less is more!
Blessings
Catherine
