Please provide the common reference range of salivary hormones.

Hi Catherine,

I appreciate your much needed website and am a lifetime member of it.

The Canterbury Health Lab in Christchurch is the only Lab in New Zealand providing salivary tests. Progesterone and testosterone are the only tests provided. However, the Canterbury Health Lab advised that the salivary testosterone normal range is not known to them and is to be determined!

Could you please advise me on the normal range of salivary:

  • testosterone
  • estrogens: estrone [E1], estradiol [E2] and estriol [E3]
  • cortisol
  • DHEA
  • androstedione
  • pregnonolone
  • melatonin
  • progesterone: luteal and follicular phase

Please include the normal salivary range for productive, peri, pre and menopausal age. Also, could you likewise provide the common range of the above salivary hormones in PCOS condition.

Would you please advise me on good Australian salivary test laboratories, and a contact for Dr. Zava Laboratories.

Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you so much.

Respectfully,

Dr Cveta

Dear Dr Cveta,

Your subscription to our ‘Guide’ website actually finances this “much needed” support & education center for women and medical professionals who are looking for safer choices in hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Therefore, I humbly thank you for your endorsement of our body of work.

I contacted Mr Colm Benson, Health Services Manager for Analytical Reference Laboratories (ARL), Melbourne regarding your request. Colm kindly provided a sample of ARL’s new Salivary Hormone Test Report detailing reference and target ranges for the various hormones.

According to Colm, ARL regularly receives specimens from New Zealand, Europe and Asia.

I will endeavour, in a follow-up article, to post respective reference ranges for the hormones omitted in ARL’s report.

I’m especially pleased to note the inclusion of a P4:E2 ratio. The ideal treatment ratio between progesterone [P4] to estradiol [E2] is at least 200:1. In healthy women without breast cancer, we find that the saliva progesterone level is routinely 200 to 300 times greater than the saliva estradiol level. Conversely, in women with breast cancer, the saliva P4/E2 ratio is considerably less than 200 to 1.

Using ARL’s breakdown of estrone [E1], estradiol [E2] and estriol [E3], we can estimate our risk of breast cancer using the estrogen quotient (EQ). The estrogen quotient is the amount of estriol divided by the sum of the amounts of estrone and estradiol: EQ = E3 / (E1 + E2). If a woman’s EQ is low, her risk of breast cancer is higher. Basically, the higher the EQ, the better.

Testing facilities

The Natural-Progesterone-Advisory-Network.com publishes a free listing of international saliva hormone testing facilities. ZRT Laboratory is included on this list. Your contact email address for Dr Zava is info@zrtlab.com.

I trust the above information is helpful. And please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.
