Why does progesterone make me tired, lethargic and sleepy?

Hi Catherine,

Am taking progesterone and it makes me tired and lethargic and sleepy? Do you know why?

Thank you,

Theresa

Dear Theresa,

We know that high levels of progesterone can have a sedative effect on the central nervous system, and that extremely potent doses can be used as an anesthetic.

Evidence suggests progesterone is selectively concentrated in brain cells, and has a beneficial effect on recovery from brain injury.

In smaller individualised doses, progesterone cream can have a calming or mildly sedating effect which makes bedtime application ideal to facilitate a restful night’s sleep.

The symptoms you describe here, Theresa, are possibly an indication you are applying progesterone a little too liberally. I would suggest you drop your dose, see if things improve, certainly get your GP to order some pathology work to determine your hormone levels.

And be sure to chart your journey.
