Will my periods return if I have entered menopause and my doctor has prescribed estrogen in the form of HRT?

Yes and no. An ‘unnatural’ period will return if you are put on estrogen replacement therapy and forced to take breaks (which is a routine procedure to prevent the dangerous build up of the endometrial lining).

If you are on estrogen continuously (with an intact uterus) and were not advised to have a periodic break, you would experience break through bleeding and would probably warrant a curette. This is why progestogens are prescribed along with estrogen to prevent thickening of the uterine lining, and the regime provided with HRT is designed to bring about a chemically induced period every month.

Note, this will not render you fertile if your ovaries have ceased to function.

It goes without saying, a women who has no uterus and is on estrogen replacement therapy alone (dosage may be continuous) cannot possibly have a bleed or build up of endometrial tissue because her uterus has been removed.
