Will progesterone help cure thrush?
I have thrush. What does this mean? Will progesterone help this problem? I have read that progesterone actually makes it worse
Most women get confused by the difference between progestogens such as The Contraceptive Pill and Provera, as opposed to natural progesterone. Certainly, there is strong evidence suggesting some drugs, when combined with synthetic progestogens, have been known to cause problems with Candida or thrush. We have, however, observed women on natural progesterone supplementation over a period of 12-18 months who reported a marked improvement of their problems. It certainly doesn’t become progressively worse.
We have chatted with women who have been sufferers of chronic thrush and cystitis for years and years. They’re on the anti-Candida yeast-free, sugar-free, refined foods diet and using courses of natural probiotics such as acidophilus and microdophilus or the friendly bacteria, with little effect in killing or combating this chronic problem. Anti-fungal drugs and antibiotics are hard on the liver and kidneys, and certainly can be detrimental long term, and build up resistance.
Progesterone alone will not resolve the problem of Candida, particularly if it?s chronic, but it seems to be a missing link in the equation. You need to work in conjunction with a good naturopath or health professional.
The most commonly known forms of successful treatment found by women are those that attempt to build integrity of the gut and immune systems through support of the liver.
Improve gut elimination by eating high fibres, improving your eating habits and eliminating sugars. Avoid foods containing high bacteria, fungi, and viruses such as processed junk foods, processed meat (deli meat, hamburger meats), and incorporate natural antibiotics such as garlic, ginger root, onion, and radish.
Leaky gut is perhaps the most common contributing cause to estrogen dominance and Candida. So unless the underlying cause is addressed progesterone will have only a band-aid affect on your health.
In conditions such as chronic thrush, good hormonal balance begins in the digestive tract and liver. And if the bowel is suffering leaky bowel syndrome, the body is contaminating itself with toxic xeno-estrogens.
We suggest women reduce their internal toxicity by working on their liver and cleansing the blood to improve their immunity and elimination systems. This assists the body in the build up of friendly bacteria to optimise gut function creating an environment that bad and harmful bacteria cannot thrive in.
However, friendly bacteria can quickly become less ‘friendly’ in poor health and nutritional deficiencies, resulting in hormonal imbalance and estrogen dominance. It is very much linked to bad eating habits and obesity, allergies, poor bowel, gut and liver function. Simply, Candida cannot thrive in a healthy environment.
Candida predisposes women to severe PMS with depression, mood swings and fluid retention. Irregular periods, infertility and endometriosis have also been linked to this state of imbalance. So we cannot over-emphasise the importance of taking control and listening to you body. Taking correctional measures in order to bring about a more balanced and healthy environment for the body to function, thus maximising the benefits of progesterone.
Candida presents a constellation of symptoms similar to those associated with liver dysfunction, bowel disorders, and estrogen dominance. And all are inter-related, often masked and undetected due to their similarities. That’s why it’s important to approach treatment on a number of levels - hormone balancing, detoxification, building gut integrity and immunity. Sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) often fall into this category.
Progesterone dosage is in accordance to estrogen dominance symptoms, the average dose being 32mg from day 12-26; menopausal 3 weeks on, 1 week off. If severe estrogen dominance due to weight problems and diet, a strict estrogen dominance reduction program must be adhered to, otherwise progesterone will have minimal benefits on Candida.
