Will progesterone make my hair fall out? I was on the Pill once and this is what happened to me.
Be aware, the body does not react to synthetic progestogens contained in the Contraceptive Pill in quite the same way it reacts to natural progesterone.
The alterations to the molecule to render it a synthetic progestogen means The Pill has the potential to cause undesirable side effects in the body.
Loss of scalp hair is one such side effect when a progestogen is combined with estrogen. However, the molecule used in the manufacture of natural progesterone cream has not been tampered with, giving it a significant safety margin.
Low progesterone levels, month after month, can trigger hair loss.
When progesterone levels fall as a result of ovarian follicle failure (lack of ovulation), the body responds by increasing its production of the adrenal cortical steroid, androstenedione, an alternative precursor for the production of other adrenal cortical hormones.
This hormone conveys some androgenic (male-like) properties, in this case, male pattern hair loss. This can be halted by bringing the body’s progesterone levels back to normal, causing the androstenedione levels to gradually fall. Re-growth occurred, in most cases, within approx. 6-12 months. And women reported improvement of hair thickness and texture whilst on progesterone.
