Will taking estrogen with progesterone affect my headaches?

Yes, it can. Please refer to our comments on intracellular edema and fluid retention.

This is why it is important if you are taking a combination of estrogen and progesterone replacement, we suggest you assess your estrogen dosage. Also note that you must break from estrogen at the same time you break from progesterone cream, otherwise you will fail to break the estrogen dominance cycle, and headaches and migraines will persist.

If you are using vaginal estrogen pessaries or creams, make sure you know why you are using them because there are various types of estrogen and dosage prescribed on the market. A popular form of estrogen this route is estradiol rather than oral. Estradiol dosage could negate or override your progesterone thus creating a estrogen dominance environment. If this is the case, you won’t feel many benefits of using topical progesterone at physiological doses of 20-32mg.

If headaches fall into this category, progesterone effectiveness will be compromised in headache management.

I suffer vaginal atrophy and dryness, and use estriol cream. Will this create hormonal headaches?

In most cases the answer is “no”, as estriol is a very mild and safe form of estrogen. And the creams tend to be at lower doses such that they do not compromise progesterone therapy. It’s an ideal approach to maintaining healthy vaginal mucosa without causing increased side effects of estrogen dominance such as headaches.

However, about 2% of women have reported that they are so sensitive to any form of estrogen that even the slightest dose will bring on an instant migraine.
